This Octagonal
tent design made its first popular appearance in Garret and Alexandra Connover’s book “The Snow Walker’s
Companion” (now “the Winter Wilderness
Companion”). The idea
is to provide plenty of room with tall walls to sit near, one center pole
and total useable floor space.
The conical shape sheds the wind, rain and snow to stand proudly
through nasty weather. The
limited roof area makes for a very efficiently heated space. The conical design has been proven
on long trips and in extremely cold temperatures.
The little details
that make this such a great tent:
each Snow Walker is constructed with two pockets for gear sewn
into the wall seam on the inside.
Also inside the tent loops are sewn into the roof seams to
facilitate the erection of a rope lattice for drying gear. The door overlaps a full 12 inches
and uses either wooden toggles or webbing to secure closed. ( your
choice) We can add Velcro, a
zipper or both to completely seal the door overlap. Snow flaps are placed on the
bottom of each wall such that they can be used either inside or outside
of the tent. Your choice of
canvas loops or grommets at the stake positions and the guy line
positions. The peak is
standard with a solid reinforcement for an interior pole with the option
of a loop sewn to the outside or a stainless steel grommet hand placed
into position. Reinforcements
abound in a tent designed to weather the storm.
Stove Jacks are also
offered for the Snow Walker.
Placed in wither the wall (standard) or the roof, we have stove
jacks to fit most size stove pipes.
Tell us your pipe diameter and the location you would like your
jack placed and let us work our magic to prepare your tent for frigid
winter evenings. Stove jacks
are installed with a surrounding of Velcro to attach the removable jack
cover. The cover is used when
your stove is not along for the trip.
The FLY protects the
roof of the tent providing one more layer of water repellency and holding
the heat a bit longer. It is
sized to provide an overlap for the tent roof. We sell the fly separate
from the tent body because not everyone needs both.
