They use Balsam Fir, chopped to a point at the ground end, knots
flattened, shaved smooth - the tips are at least the thickness
of a man's thumb. Most trees with a 4 or 5 inch diameter at the
base are 50 years old, growing very dense and tall in the Adirondack
Mountains.
They are ready to use when they arrive. They do not recommend
any finish, although some people have successfully dipped the
butt ends (only the part that touches the ground) into a preservative
(deck finish, etc.). Any higher application is likely to discolor
the tipi canvas or be dangerously flammable.
Natural Balsam Fir poles will last many years with proper storage
and use.

trees or shave them.
